and forest degradation. In November 2007, ASB released its interim report Opportunities for Avoided Deforestation with Sustainable Benefits. The research found that at most sites, deforesting activities generated less than $5 per tonne of CO2 released. These results suggest that abatement costs of avoided deforestation could be more cost effective than other climate change mitigation activities. With the right policy incentives, mechanisms for encouraging REDD could bring significant benefits to smallholder farmers, to ecosystems, and to the global climate.
