Scenario building is a powerful tool for decision making process which brings together participants from all levels. By stimulating creative ways of thinking, scenarios help everyone from local farmers to national policy makers in making decisions based on different possible futures. During consultations in Peru, Brazil, Indonesia, and Cameroon, ASB partners expressed a need to learn about decision-making tools that could help them assess future uncertainties and workable responses to these plausible futures. As a result, ASB, The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) designed a project to build capacity for stakeholders to develop scenarios about different possible futures, in order to support decisionmaking.
Objective
A key objective of Scenarios Project was to achieve long-lasting benefits for the many national, local, and international partners working with ASB. ASB partners requested regional training activities as a result of this initiative

The ASB Scenarios project was funded by the Government of the Netherlands through its Programme for Cooperation with International Institutes (SII) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Secretariat provided conceptual guidance, training and technical support for the ASB Scenarios project.
This project was active from 2004-2007.
Key Publication
The Field Guide to the Future is a practical, step-by-step manual for using scenario-based methods in communities. The guide explains methods to help communities think ahead and plan for change. These methods are: Scenarios, Projections, Visioning and Pathways.
The guide is a collaborative effort between the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), ASB - Partnership for the Tropical Forests Margins, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) Secretariat.
ASB partners share here their successes in applying integrated natural resource management science in the tropics in the areas of knowledge, action, and capacity building.
