Strategic Planning for Climate-Smart Landscapes

At the invitation of the World Bank, ASB Scientists Peter Minang and Douglas White made a presentation on best approaches to climate smart agriculture (CSA) at the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C in the US.

Using data from the ASB Partnership benchmark sites in Peru, the scientists showed the need to understand the tradeoffs and synergies of CSA against other land uses at the landscape level as this could lead to maximizing of benefits from the CSA approach. “Synergy between REDD+ and CSA can lead to greater emission reductions, multiple productivity and resilience benefits,” noted Peter Minang’ in his presentation.

He also highlighted the need for coordinated social efforts that address trends such as deforestation and biodiversity loss; as well as policies that encourage participation from key sectors needed to ensure a scale up of the CSA approach at multiple levels.
