Collaboration towards development of Kenya’s climate strategy
By Scott McFatridge
ASB Partnership, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) together with the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) are working in collaboration with the Kenya Government in developing a section on climate change mitigation for the country’s national climate change response strategy.
In May, a meeting was held to engage local experts, policymakers, civil society and private sector with preliminary results from ongoing analysis of options that could promote low-carbon development among Kenya’s agriculture, forestry, transport, energy, industrial and other land-use sectors.
The analysis of the options was based on their potential in climate change mitigation, cost-effectiveness, alignment with Kenya Government priorities, contribution to sustainable development, and adaptation co-benefits. At the meeting, participants reviewed the quality of data presented and gave feedback on any existing gaps, particularly on options that might have not been captured during the analysis. A report with details on the options identified is under development and will be published as part of the larger Kenya’s national climate change Action Plan.
