Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn in Indonesia: Summary Report
and Synthesis of Phase II, 1998.
ABSTRACT:
This report
presents results from ASB benchmark sites in Jambi and Lampung provinces on the
island of Sumatra in Indonesia, which are part of ASB's ongoing global research
project. The report links global environmental benefits to sustainable
alternatives to slash-and-burn in Indonesia, drawing on ASB Phase II assessments
of the implications of alternative land use practices on climate change and
biodiversity. This is achieved via assessments of tradeoffs (and
complementarities) among impacts spanning the plot, household, landscape,
watershed, and national level--as well as global environmental phenomena. The
report additionally includes an in-depth assessment of the socio-economic and
policy issues that affect adoptability of these alternatives by Indonesian
smallholders.
