Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn: Summary Report and Synthesis
of Phase II in Cameroon, Reprint November,
2002.
ABSTRACT:
This report presents results from ASB
benchmark sites in the Yaounde, Mbalmayo, and Ebolowa regions in Cameroon. The
report links global environmental benefits to sustainable alternatives to
slash-and-burn in Cameroon, drawing on ASB Phase II assessments of the
implications of alternative land use practices on climate change and
biodiversity. This is achieved via assessments of tradeoffs (and
complementarities) among impacts spanning the plot, household, landscape,
watershed, and national level--as well as global environmental phenomena. The
report additionally draws on an in-depth assessment of the socio-economic and
policy issues that affect adoptability of these alternatives by Cameroon's
smallholders.
