Sustainability Working Group

Agronomic sustainability is an important interface for linking global environmental issues with local farmer concerns.

To this end, ASB developed a set of plot-level criteria and indicators to evaluate the sustainability of a range of land use systems which can follow forest conversion, including measurements of soil structure, nutrient balance, and crop protection.

ASB-Sustainable Land Use Mosaics (SLUM)  built on this plot-level assessment of environmental and agronomic parameters to incorporate landscapes as a unit of analysis in its local, national, regional and global activities. By addressing the hydrological, ecological and other environmental services at the landscape scale, ASB scientists worked to fill the landscape-level gap in terms of impacts on local people, priorities of key policymakers and potential complementarities with global environmental concerns.
