| Abstract | Today, communities living in tropical forest margins find themselves in the midst of myriad changes: social, political, economic and environmental forces are transforming their worlds quickly. These forces are complex and often interact in unpredictable ways and therefore are difficult to comprehend. Many of them emanate from processes way beyond the domains of the communities—for example, from global market adjustments, realignments in international politics, and generational shifts in the moorings of cultures, identities and values. |
