| Abstract | In the last 30 years, over 70 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest have been cleared, principally for unsustainable development. Degraded land, most of which is under pastures, occurs in more than 30 million hectares of the region. The Amazon Initiative, a consortium of major research and development institutions, has been formed to help to prevent, reduce, and reverse land degradation by promoting policies and technologies for sustainable land management in the region. |
