| Abstract | Drawing together the available literature on cattle in the Amazon, the focus and intent is for a detailed analysis of the cattle sector and how it fits within Amazon development from agronomic, ecological and economic perspectives. The focus is on the Brazilian Amazon, which represents the majority of the forest, and has also attracted considerable academic attention. The nine chapters discuss: cattle and development of the Amazon; ecology of the Amazon; agricultural land-uses in the Amazon; economic valuation of forests; extent of deforestation; cattle as a cause of deforestation; cattle ranching systems in the Amazon; economics of cattle ranching in the Amazon; and sustainable cattle production in the Amazon. |
