| Abstract | In the developing world, the livelihoods of over one billion people depend on the production of farms of less than two hectares in size. When only annual crops are grown, the common result is the degradation of the earth. In the process, decimate natural forests by extracting fuelwood and timber, or burned to make room for more crops. The consequences are typical soil depletion, species extinction, poverty and hunger. The answer is to provide farmers with few options. This is the goal of the program Alternatives to Slash & Burn Agriculture. |
