The area studied is in the rainforest of the Congo River basin in Central Africa. The chapter examines: (1) the environmental consequences of both population-driven and policy-led intensification; (2) tradeoffs in economic performance, carbon stocks and biodiversity for dominant land-use systems; (3) the underlying factors leading to intensification at both household and community levels.</style></abstract><section><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">10</style></section></record></records></xml>
